Water Heater Service in Ocala: Repair or Replace?
Signs your water heater is near the end, what affects the price, and how to choose the right replacement.
How Long Water Heaters Last
Most tank water heaters last about 8 to 12 years. Hard water, which is common across Central Florida, speeds up sediment build-up and wears out heating elements and anode rods faster. Rusty water, rumbling noises, a leak at the base or a tank older than 10 years are the signs to plan a replacement.
Common Repairs
Heating elements and thermostats on electric tanks, the temperature and pressure relief valve, anode rods, and on gas units the thermocouple or gas valve. If the tank itself leaks, it cannot be repaired; it has to be replaced.
Choosing a Replacement
Tank size should match your household; most homes need 40 to 50 gallons. Heat pump (hybrid) water heaters use a fraction of the electricity of a standard electric tank and work well in Florida’s warm garages. Tankless units save space and never run out, but cost more to install. We size it with you and give written options and pricing first.
Safety
If water is leaking, turn off the cold water supply at the top of the tank and the power or gas to the unit. If the relief valve is releasing water or the tank is making loud popping sounds, shut it off and call.
Water Heater Questions — Answered Honestly
If your tank is under 8 years old and the repair is straightforward (element, thermocouple, anode rod), repair usually makes sense. Over 10–12 years old with a significant failure — especially a leaking tank — replacement is almost always the better value. We give you honest numbers for both.
For homes with high hot water demand or limited storage space, tankless makes strong sense — endless hot water and 20–30% lower energy consumption. For a small household with consistent usage, a modern efficient tank unit often provides better value. We give you honest comparisons.
Turn the cold water supply valve (located above the unit) to the off position. This stops water flowing into the tank. Then call us — an active tank leak almost always means replacement.
Most standard tank water heater replacements can be scheduled quickly. Tankless installations may require additional planning. We give you an accurate timeline on the call.
If the tank leaks or it is over about 10 years old, replacing it is usually the better value. Younger units with a failed element, thermostat or valve are usually worth repairing.
On electric tanks, a failed lower heating element is the usual cause. Sediment build-up and an undersized tank are the next most common reasons.
Bacteria in the tank can react with the anode rod. Flushing the tank and changing the anode rod type usually fixes it.
Often, yes. It uses much less electricity than a standard electric tank and our warm climate helps it work efficiently. It needs some open space around it, which we check first.
A like-for-like tank replacement usually takes a few hours. Switching to a different type or location can take longer.
